about

"Redacted" is a series of releases showcasing previously-unreleased and decommissioned Method One tracks, freshly remastered.

REDACTED - PART THREE consists of eight tunes written between 2013 and 2016, and showcases some of Method One's most experimental works. From minimal bass-heavy monsters to gorgeous synth landscapes, the songs collected here span a variety of tempos, genres, and even time signatures.

1. Five Steps (2013) - Bass. That was pretty much the idea behind "Five Steps", which I initially wrote to play at a dBridge show in San Francisco. I'm particularly happy with the subtle jungle and hardcore references in this tune, and have played it a lot over the last decade.

2. Tundra (2015) - While most of my music in the early/mid 2010s was written at a tempo of 170bpm, most were expected to be experienced in a slower, half-time context. By contrast,"Tundra" was an experiment to see if I could write something with the full velocity of 170bpm, but without using the expected patterns and rhythms of drum & bass.

3. Talisman (2015) - "Talisman" came from a happy accident when playing with my Korg Mono/Poly, which I had just retrofitted with a MIDI kit. I realized that the arpeggiator sounds I was experimenting with weren't in the standard 4/4 time signature, but they sounded too cool not to use. So they became the foundation of "Talisman"— a 170bpm tune with a 6/4 surprise.

4. Radiate (2013) - Back in 2013, I was super-excited about "Radiate". But I could never get the mixdown right, and it wound up being abandoned for less-frustrating projects. Revisiting it in 2024—with new plugins, techniques, and a room with better acoustics—was a revelation, and I'm thrilled to include it here.

5. Axiom (2015) - A heaping pile of analog synth goodness, named for the Akai AX60 that provided the initial bassline. This tune got to about 95% completion in 2015, but for some reason I moved to another project and never finished it. Nine years later, it's now finished and I'm happy to include it on this album.

6. Flowers From Ashes (2016) - "Flowers From Ashes" was written as a gift for my long-time girlfriend Rebecca, and it's one I am very proud of. There's a lot going on here: analog synths, live guitars, museum field recordings, shoegaze and electro influences...it's a real "kitchen sink" kind of tune, and ambitious in a way that I don't usually achieve.

7. Not There (2013) - A short analog synth interlude written for an Auxiliary Podcast. Not much more to say than that.

8. Droplet (2013) - For most of my 30 years of production, I have stayed mostly in the tempo range of drum & bass, either at full speed or halftime. But sometimes it's good to experiment and push boundaries, and "Droplet" is something quite rare—my attempt at creating something in the house or techno mode...though I'm not quite sure if it fits in either genre. In any case, a worthy addition to the Redacted series.
